Rosie The Riveter

 In Ocean Academy

By: Drennan Hayden/Art Teacher

In order to commemorate Women’s History Month (March) the students all chose an influential woman to illustrate. Student selection included Amelia Earhart, Ronda Rousey, The Queen of England, Rosa parks and many more. The illustrations were posted to the bulletin board with a large painting of Rosie the Riveter as the Centerpiece. For those who are unaware, Rosie The Riveter is a cultural icon of World War II, representing the women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war. The character has been an icon of women’s rights and empowerment ever since. Celebrities like Beyonce and Pink have paid tribute to the character in music videos and other performances. I really enjoy painting a new feature for the bulletin board every month because it energies the staff and student body. People naturally get excited about art, so putting something new on display for everybody to enjoy monthly is great pleasure of mine. Great job everybody!

I think this was an important project and bulletin to present to the school. Every woman posted on that board and more changed our world as we know it. I’ve seen Rosie the Riveter many times and I think it was a great image during the war effort to show that Americans and women are strong and can do anything guys can. Great job Mr. Hayden!!

I loved the “Rosie the Riveter” picture on the board. It was nice and detailed and looked almost real! Plus, I’m happy to see females around the world getting noticed for a lot of things whether they were actual people or just our favorite Female characters from movies and shows. I’m still mad I didn’t get to make a picture for it. But it was still pretty cool to look at.

Mr.Hayden did an incredible job on it. It’s good to have that as a reminder because a lot of kids forget how things used to be.

These collages of everyone’s drawings around one of Mr. Hayden’s paintings are very interesting because it is interesting to see who everyone chooses to draw or paint and how they portray them in their individual drawings.
